Playing Tonight - Lucia Cadotsch Speak Low (Switz/Swe)
“Remember the name Lucia Cadotsch - you’re going to be hearing a lot of it” is how the veteran British jazz critic introduced his five-star review of Speak Low’s debut album.
The Guardian writer and BBC jazz radio presenter enthused about the Zurich-born singer’s classical clarity, folk singer’s simplicity, and the ‘eerily beautiful’ performance that Cadotsch produced in the company of two edgy Swedish jazz instrumentalists, saxophonist Otis Sandsjo and bass player Petter Eldh.
Fordham isn’t the only jazz watcher to have been wowed by Cadotsch either, as the Swiss singer has been picking up praise and awards everywhere she goes, including the ‘Best Vocal’ award at the Echo Jazz Awards, last year.
While her singing can be punctuated by split-note sax sounds, spiky bass lines and percussive strumming, the overall sound is remarkably melodious across a
repertoire that includes some classics, that include Moon River, Don’t Explain and Strange Fruit.
“…she paints new pictures of old songs, from jazz standards like Moon River to gloomy Gloomy Sunday. She celebrates the art of the simple ; So deeply touching.” _ Mittelbayerische Zeitung
